Historical Shoulder Construction

Does anyone know the correct construction technique for shoulder construction 1900 to 1920?

I know they mostly did not have shoulder pads. As the shoulder seem travels backwards at a diagonal the chest canvas ends about 2” from the rear side seam [see pics below]. This kinda forms a shoulder pad. What I have done before is thin this down, cover it with melton and call it a day.

I have no idea if this is even close to the correct method.

The shoulder pad is a continuation of the body canvas, extending beyond the shoulder and down to the half back line. Cut in a shape similar to the shoulder pad.
