I dropped and broke my vintage 13" fabric shears :-(
I have an astonishing pair of 10" pointed shears for fine work, but the loss of these will be great for me. Only they were never good at cutting very thick fabric [20oz +]. I have often wondered if I would be better with an electric rotary fabric cutter as I work with heavy cloth a lot? does anyone have experience? Would I be better off buying a €100 pair of 12" shears of a €100 rotary cutter to supplement my 10" fine point shears?
MY sadly dropped 13" shears :-(
You could probably pick up a pair of decent bench shears on ebay and have them sharpened.
DECISION MADE - cos my friend was ridiculously kind and gave me half the £260 - Im buying a pair of hand forged in Sheffield Ernest Wright 13" Classic Tailors Shears...
But I do have to wait for them to MAKE them which will be about 12 weeks.
I am sure there is someone who could weld these back together.
Is it possible to get the shears welded back together? Pipe fitters at oil refineries are extremely good at welding.
Read that the handle and the blades could be different materials welded together. If so, you might need to do some research. If the welder doesn't know the lingo that would probably be the wrong welder.
Decades ago I watched a video of a French blacksmith hammering out a pair of shears. In those days they made them for the individual like tailors make clothes for individual.
Ah Lee are you moving to the dark side. Rotary cutter!
My students at Parsons had a thing for Rotary cutters, I think theirs were manual ones.
My old boss used one of these for cutting multiples. Such as set pocket sizing for army uniform. I never seen it in action but it seemed to be quite successful at it.
Each to their own.
If you do get one, let us know what it's like.
I have a heavy pair of bench shears for my overcoat weights.
I took them out a few weeks back when I made myself a pair of overcoat trousers. I've been living in them since.
Love overcoat trousers
