In my old books it says to use tape cut on the warp. You use bias cut, obviously this is a lot more elastic. Is this because modern cloths are much lighter so requite less control?
Or is there another reason I should be aware of?

Straight cut tape can cause the edge to distorte or wave if applied to tight. Bias cut doesn't cause this issue.
