I have been thinking about a good definition of tailoring for many years, and it drives me nuts when the internet or a dictionary define tailoring as altering garments. What I'm looking for is for what Rory would consider tailoring. This is what I have come up with. Please give me your comments. Thanks Tailoring is the art of making garments with built-in internal structure, padding, interfacing, shaping using stitching and iron work, and customized fit, historically done by a tailor, often in wool, and often for men. The customized fit probably does not apply to all tailoring.

Tailoring is art.
Make clothes that fit around the persons body to wear that meets the person's standard of style, fashion or some other kind of garment. They are comfortable and the customer can move in them.
Another definition is pad stitching canvases for shape. This means vest, trouser and shirt makers are not tailors.
At least two fittings. Once a good pattern is established one fitting might be enough. Some tailors never use patterns. Always, one off. Fittings are definitely required.
Some of the old school will say, only hand sewn. No machines at all.
Sure there is more to add.
I posted this 2 weeks ago and there are no comments yet. Rory, do you have any thoughts on a good definition of tailoring? Anyone else have any suggestions for me? Thanks
